266XL Dual Compressor Gate

Most compressor/gates provide less than musical compression, coupled with gating that swallows transients—or closes early, cutting off decay and reverb tails. The superb engineering in the 266XL ensures that both its compression and gating provide versatility and excellent sonic performance in situations where other compressor/gates typically produce undesirable processing artifacts.

When using the 266XL’s AutoDynamic™ Attack and Release controls, artists and engineers will find that the center settings deliver classic dbx compression, while the full control range produces voicings that extend from slow “leveling” to aggressive “peak” limiting.

The Auto Dynamic™ circuitry continuously adjusts the actual attack and release times to optimally match the program material. Since users aren’t restricted to using the Attack and Release controls only in “peak” operation, they can tailor the response of the 266XL for individual tracks, mixed program material, special effects or system protection. As a result, production studios can use the versatile 266XL to replace multiple “single-purpose” limiters while sound reinforcement users can standardize on the 266XL for all of their applications.

The 266XL’s advanced gate circuitry uses a completely new, program-dependent timing algorithm to produce ultra-smooth release characteristics—even with complex signals, such as voice or reverb decays. dbx engineers went on to take advantage of the wide dynamic range and high precision of the dbx® VCA to design in an extra-wide threshold range and ensure top gating performance for each application.

Separate precision LED displays for gain reduction, compression threshold and gate threshold allow quick, accurate setup, while the 266XL’s intuitive operation lets users easily smooth uneven levels, add sustain to guitars, squash drums or tighten up mixes. In Stereo couple mode, the Channel 1 controls become Master controls, and Channel 2 follows precisely to ensure a rock solid stereo image—even with high amounts of compression. Professionals and newcomers will find that the 266XL sets up rapidly and musically the first time it is used, and every time thereafter.

The dbx® 266XL processor is the result of an intensive engineering and product development effort aimed at taking advantage of the latest and best advances in manufacturing technology to deliver true dbx audio performance and reliability to our customers at the lowest possible cost. The 266XL puts a completely new level of compressor/gate performance within everyone’s reach.

Features:

  • • Goof proof operation to smooth uneven levels, add sustain to guitars, fatten drums or tighten up mixes

  • • New gate timing algorithms ensure the smoothest release characteristics

  • • Program-adaptive expander/gates

  • • Great sounding dunamics control for any type of program material

  • • Separate precision LED displays for gain reduction, compression threshold and gate threshold allow quick, accurate setup

  • • Stereo or dual-mode operation

160A

160A  Compressor / Limiter

Since its introduction in the mid 1970's, the dbx 160 series has been the world's most popular line of audio compressors. After the classic 160 (which is still used daily in many world class studios), came the 165, the 160X and the 160XT. The 160X/XT were the models that truly became the industry standard. Solid construction, fool proof operation, great sound, at-a-glance metering and a bulletproof output stage all contributed to its popularity with musicians, recording studios, consultants and installers, and broadcast media production people alike.

The dbx® 160A is a legendary dbx® 160 family of compressor/limiters. The same classic sound, easy set-up and no compromise metering is now married to an improved signal path and stronger chassis design. The result is industry standard compressor/limiter which is digital-ready and road tough.

Featuring switch-selectable OverEasy® and Hard Knee compression curves along with extremely wide-ranging threshold, ratio and output controls, the dbx 160A is up to any task. True RMS level detection provides the most natural-sounding dynamics processing available, from subtle compression to "brick wall" peak limiting. Choose low ratios and OverEasy® compression to transparently smooth out fluctuating vocal and instrumental levels. Or use the 160A's Hard Knee compression and high ratios (up to and beyond :1 and over 60dB gain reduction) for bombproof protection against overload distortion in digital recording, P.A. systems and broadcast signals. The 160A is fully compatible with +4/-10dB and balanced/ unbalanced systems, and its electronically balanced output stage is an outstanding line driver for long cable runs (an output transformer is optional). The 19-segment, switchable input/ output LED metering can be easily calibrated to any operating level. 12-segment gain reduction LEDs provide precise analysis at a glance.

The dbx® 160A's unique "INFINITY +" inverse-compression mode actually decreases the audio output level below unity gain when the input exceeds threshold, a real lifesaver for correcting overbearing vocal choruses and controlling runaway house mix levels. A detector input can be used with an equalizer for de-essing sibilant vocals and selectively smoothing out boomy notes on acoustic guitar and bass. And two 160As can be stereo-coupled to process an entire mix or instruments mic'd in stereo, without shifting the left/right image. Its musical sound, easy operation and unequaled versatility made the original dbx® 160 a world standard. The 160A follows that tradition, while meeting the challenges of a digital world.

Features:

  • • OverEasy® or classic hard knee compression with dbx's® ultra-musical program dependent attack and release times

  • • Compression ratio variable from 1:1 through infinity :1 to negative compression

  • • Precision dual RMS LED display monitors input or putput and gain reduction over a wide range and calibrates for different operating levels

  • • Over 60dB of gain reduction available

  • • Exclusive Infinity+ compression allows negative compression

  • • Independent balanced and unbalanced outputs can drive 600 loads to +24dBm simultaneously. New floating balanced output stage drives any load

  • • Optional output transformer capable

  • • Strappable with another 160A for true RMS stereo summing operation

1066

1066 Dual Compressor Limiter Gate

After producing the world's most renown series of compressors, the task of producing a new compressor worthy of our reputation would be daunting for most engineers. Not for dbx®. Our engineers know audio like no one else in the world. Now the fruits of their talents are available to you in the form of the 1066 Stereo Compressor/Limiter/Gate.

Want to instantly add that classic dbx response to your mix? It's there at the touch of the "Auto" button. Or use the independent Attack and Release controls to tailor the 1066 to your specific needs. Unwanted frequencies or mic bleed in the signal path? Frequency dependent gain control is a snap to set up and execute with our Side Chain External button (SC Ext). Use the Side Chain Monitor button (SC Mon) and your favorite EQ to dial in the specific frequencies you want to trigger the device. As has become our standard, the contour switch allows entire mixes to be easily smoothed with soft compression while keeping low frequencies from punching holes in the overall mix. Selectable input and output metering allow you to make sure that everything is matched up level-wise, maximizing your signal-to-noise ratio.

For overall speaker protection, our new PeakStopPlus™ does all previous circuits one better. With a new design, the PeakStopPlus represses those unwanted transients from blowing your drivers while minimizing the distortion common to many other "hard" limiters. Selectable Hard-Knee or OverEasy® characteristics make the 1066 ideal for your gain control needs, whether you're looking for "heavy" almost-special-effects compression or soft, smooth gain leveling. New lightpipe technology replaces standard LED's found on most other units, making the 1066 both very easy to read and much easier to operate.

In the studio, broadcast facility or on the road with a P.A. system, the 1066 is designed for perfectly simple operation. The 1066 allows you to eliminate unwanted signals, flexibly control overall signal gain and guard your overall mix in dual mono or stereo operation.

At the heart of the 1066 is our new dbx V2 VCA. Developed especially for the 1066, 1046 and other 10 series products to come, this revolutionary VCA boasts superb dynamic range characteristics while maintaining very low distortion and almost immeasurable noise characteristics. The bottom line is this: a new VCA working in conjunction with world class design makes the dbx 1066 perform better than compressors selling for hundreds more.

State-of-the-technology VCA's, meticulous component selection, and scrupulous testing procedures are just a few more reasons that the new dbx 1066 is the latest in a long line of pedigreed dbx signal processors.

Features:

  • • Selectable auto (classic dbx®) or manual (variable Attack and Release) compression

  • • Contour switch removes unwanted low frequency information from detector circuit

  • • Selectable Overeasy® or Hard Knee compression modes

  • • PeakStopPlus™ limiting for setting maximum allowable level with minimal distortion

1046

1046 Quad Compressor Limiter

  • In today's recording and sound reinforcement environments, the need for multiple channels of high quality, easy to use compression is growing rapidly. The new dbx® 1046 is designed to provide the audio professional with just that: 4 channels of great sounding dbx compression for a variety of applications. Incorporating the industry standard dbx designs and the latest available manufacturing techniques, the dbx 1046 provides pristine sonic quality with that classic dbx sound.

The 1046 provides 4 channels of smooth classic dbx OverEasy® or Hard Knee compression that are perfectly suited for use on individual tracks of your multitrack recorder, and in virtually all applications the separate channels can be individually interfaced and used for entirely independent purposes. Additionally the newly developed PeakStopPlus™ is ideal for protecting your system from the oppressive peaks that can take out valuable drivers in your sound reinforcement rig or studio monitors.

All four channels have the following controls:

Threshold - allows you to set the level at which the compressor starts affecting the gain

OverEasy - allows you to select between soft compression for overall gain control or Hard Knee compression based on the characteristics of the
    original dbx 160.

Ratio - allows you to set the slope of gain reduction affecting the signal over the threshold level.

Input/Output Meter - allows you to set the meter to check the input and output levels for maximum signal-to-noise ratio and best level matching.

Output Gain - allows you to add make-up gain or to adjust the output level for that channel to match the next device's input gain.

Bypass - hard wire bypass allows you to hear how the compressor is affecting your signal.

PeakStopPlus - allows you to set the maximum signal level you want to pass through this channel. While it's virtually impossible to eliminate distortion, the PeakStopPlus circuit does it gracefully and effectively with minimal distortion.

1074 Quad Noise Gate

The latest addition to the 10 Series product line, the dbx® 1074 QuadGate™ , is the perfect companion to the 1066 and 1046. The 1074 offers 4 channels of gating with threshold, depth and release controls on each channel. The 1074, like the rest of the products in dbx 10 Series, is based on the legendary dbx V2 VCA and offers XLR inputs and outputs, and 1/4” side-chain input. In addition to an external key input per channel, the 1074 also has an internal filter that can be independently activated and controlled on a channel-per-channel basis. This filter allows the 1074 to not only clean up tracks, but gives you frequency selective control on each gate, to open exactly when you want it to. These features combined, make the 1074 an absolute must for those who require quad gating on applications including: Gating dry and percussive sounds such as snare drum and kick drum, gating sounds that have longer decay times such as cymbals and Pianos, gating hum or buzz from live instruments or recorded tracks or eliminating Headphone leakage into microphones. Gating instrument microphones to eliminate amplifier bleed. PeakStopPlus™ - allows you to set the maximum signal level you want to pass through this channel. While it's virtually impossible to eliminate distortion, the PeakStopPlus circuit does it gracefully and effectively with minimal distortion.

Stereo Link - allows you to link channels 1&2 and 3&4 for two channels of true stereo compression.

All four channels feature balanced gold plated XLR and 1/4" inputs and outputs, and switchable +4dBu or -10dBV operating level to interface each individual channel with any other device.

So whether you need to control the level, placement in the mix, or overall characteristics of 4 independent signals or control the gain leveling on a couple of stereo pairs, the dbx 1046 is for you. From the company that has been redefining the standard of signal processing for more than 30 years, dbx Professional Products now offers a bulletproof product that caters to the scrutinizing needs of those who require the precision noise gating capabilities. Once again, the engineering staff at dbx Professional Products has taken technology that has been over three decades in the making and created a product that is flexible, versatile and rock solid in construction and design. The 1074’s independent channel design with key filtering capabilities make it the perfect tool for countless applications.

223 Stereo 2-way, Mono 3-way Crossover

223

223XL Stereo 2-way, Mono 3-way Crossover

Let's take a look at the construction features of the dbx® 223. At first glance, you'll notice the units are great looking. As you turn the controls something else becomes apparent; these units are extremely well built. The controls exude great precision, and the feel is a solid "click". Also, when you open the box, you won't find the external power supply that accompanies most processors in this price range. That's because we know how difficult external power supplies can be to work with and even though it costs a little more we put the high quality power supply right in the unit. All the inputs and outputs are TRS differentially balanced 1/4" jacks that are bolted down to the chassis. This "nutting down" of the jacks insures that even if someone stomps on a cable plugged into the unit, it's not going to tear up the circuit board inside. All dbx crossovers all feature Linkwitz-Riley 24dB per octave filters, the professional standard. But then again, what did you expect?

Via a switch on the back panel, you first select whether you're operating your system in stereo 2-way or mono 3-way. Then you also set, on the back panel, whether or not you want to mono sum the LF (subwoofer) out. (Most systems that use a subwoofer are mono subbed to take advantage of amplifier power and because low frequencies are non-directional.) Back panel switches allow you to select the range of the crossover frequencies individually for both channels. The crossover frequency controls have a green LED that indicates when the x10 switch on the back panel is activated (we wouldn't make you check the switch position on the back every time you wonder where it's set). All these switches are on the back panel because it could be disastrous if you were to change them mid-program. On the front panel you'll notice there are LEDs that indicate whether the unit is in mono or stereo mode. Each channel has an input gain control for proper level setting. There's a recessed 40 Hz low cut (HPF) on each channel to remove unwanted low frequencies. Both the low and high outputs on each channel have a gain control ranging from - to +6 dB to allow muting of individual outputs and for level matching. Also, these outputs each have phase reverse switches that will help get you out of a bind without having to reconfigure your system. These phase reverse switches may be internally reconfigured as mute switches.

Features:

  • • TRS differentially balanced ins and outs

  • • Mode switch for stereo 2-way or mono 3-way operation

  • • Low frequency summed (subwoofer) output

  • • x10 range switch on both channels

  • • 40Hz high pass (low cut) filter both channels

  • • Phase reverse switch on all outputs

  • • Individual level controls on all outputs

  • • 24dB per octave Linkwitz-Riley filters (the professional standard)

  • • Stereo/Mono status LEDs indicate the selected mode

  • • dbx® 2 year parts and labor as standard

  • • CSA NRTL/C approved

  • • CE compliant

286A Microphone Processor

The dbx® 286A's Mic Preamp and Five processors can be used independently or in any combination. Why mic up vocals and instruments through a noisy, blurry mixer? The dbx 286A's sonically pristine Mic Preamp has all the features you need, including wide-ranging input gain control, switchable 48V phantom power and an 80Hz high-pass filter. Use the 286A's newly designed and patented OverEasy® Compressor to transparently smooth out uneven acoustic tracks or deliver that classic "in your face" rock vocal. Take out vocal sibilance and high frequency distortion in cymbals with the 286A's frequency tunable De-Esser. Fine-tune the Enhancer's HF Detail control to add sparkle and crispness to tracks. LF Detail control adds fullness and depth to vocals and bass instruments while simultaneously cleaning up muddy low midrange frequencies. And, the Expander/Gate's separate threshold and ratio controls allow you to subtly reduce headphone leakage or radically gate noisy guitar amps.

The dbx® 286A's full complement of metering and status LEDs visually guide you to achieving the right sound. The floating balanced XLR mic input accepts balanced or unbalanced inputs. An additional 14" TRS phone jack can accept balanced/ unbalanced line signals to process live electronic instruments or pre-recorded tracks at mixdown. An insert jack between the 286A's Mic Preamp and signal processing sections can be used to "loop out" to external processors (such as EQ) or to mix the Mic Preamp's signal out to an external destination.

The cost and hassle of patching together multiple processors for use on one track can be frustrating. The dbx® 286A gives you all the tools you'll need in one box, with the shortest signal path to help keep your music sounding clean.

2031 Single 31 Band Graphic EQ

It's amazing. One little button. So much effect. dbx® Type III® Noise Reduction is an entirely new concept... virtually instantaneous encode/decode within the circuitry of the box. We started out to build the finest EQs possible, boxes with the heritage and performance to rival our famous 30 Series EQs. And to no one's surprise they came out awfully darn good. (Ask to see the Audio Precision plots compared to the competition.) But then, Roger (our chief engineer, a nice guy, as far as engineers go) got the crazy idea of putting this new noise reduction stuff in the box. We listened to it and were amazed. The EQs sounded great without it but with it the performance was nothing short of incredible. Check it out yourself and see.

But hey, Roger wasn't about to stop there. PeakPlus® Limiter. Who knows more about limiting than the folks at dbx; nobody... that's who. So when the guys were developing this new series of EQs they wanted something that would be unique to these EQs. That's when Roger got another one of his bright ideas and said "I bet they'll work a lot better if there's a cool limiter built in." Next thing you know, all the guys are in the studio amazed at the new limiter Roger had designed specially for the 20 Series. Once again, hearing is believing... With a threshold range of 0dbu to plus 20dbu, the patent-pending PeakPlus limiter is designed to tame your program material from the subtlest nuances to the rowdiest hits. Also, the four stage LED ladder gives you a great visual indication as to what the limiter is doing.

20 Series EQs. You used to have to settle for second best in a reasonably priced EQ but not any more. With the new 20 Series from dbx Professional Products you get a great EQ circuit, a graceful yet powerful limiter and the revolutionary new design of the Type III Noise Reduction. Check out the dbx 20 Series graphic EQs at your pro audio outfitter. You'll see, with the 20 Series EQs you get MORE!!!

Features:

  • • Revolutionary instant encode/decode Type III® Noise Reduction in-circuit at the push of a button. Increases S/N ratio by up to 20dB

  • • Patent-pending PeakPlus® Limiter threshold range from 0dBu to +24dBu (off) can transparently tame the wildest hits or the subtlest nuances of any signal

  • • An extremely high quality EQ, patent-pending Type III Noise Reduciton, and the elegant new PeakPlus Limiter all in one great sounding box

2231 Dual 31 Band Graphic EQ

PeakPlus™ Limiter. Who knows more about limiting than the folks at dbx; nobody... that's who. So when the guys were developing this new series of EQs they wanted something that would be unique to these EQs. That's when Roger got another one of his bright ideas and said "I bet they'll work a lot better if there's a cool limiter built in." 786 Precision Mic PreAmp

The craftsmanship of the 786 is as stunning as the engineering is innovative. A striking blue front panel machined from 1/4" aircraft aluminum, hand-crafted solid aluminum knobs, LEDs mounted individually in machined stainless steel housings, custom VU meters with peak indicators, and heavy gauge chassis solidify the 786 as the benchmark preamplifier for decades to come. The 786 combines the best preamplifier features and an absolutely pristine audio path. In addition to having +48V phantom power as well as a phase reverse switch, the 786 also features a patent-pending EQ circuit called "spectrum" with frequency cut and boost up to 40kHz. An 11-position coarse gain switch sets the gain between +10 and +60 dB, while the fine gain control varies between -3 and +3 dB. Levels may be monitored on peak-program VU meters with adjustable reference levels. The signal path consists of a transformer-coupled, discrete-design premium input stage utilizing the proprietary dbx M8 Mic Pre-Amp Module.
"Spectrum", a unique variable high-frequency equalization circuit employed in the mic pre-amp enhances the high frequency spectral content of the signal while maintaining phase integrity. The "Detail" control varies the amount of high frequency shelving boost at the frequency determined by the Spectrum control. The combination of the Spectrum and Detail controls allow pristine high frequency equalization adjustments without the added "hash" of traditional high-frequency EQ topologies. Premium active electronics, precision 0.1% and 1% metal film resistors, great sounding temperature stable polypropylene capacitors, high-reliability board-to-board connectors with gold-palladium-nickel contacts, Jensen® transformers, gold plated Neutrik® XLRs, rare earth magnet relays with gold contacts in a hermetically sealed nitrogen environment, military grade glass epoxy circuit boards, to mention a few, contribute to the most technologically advanced preamplifier in the world.
786 Features/Specifications
The dbx Blue Series Solid State Mic Pre-Amp is a 2U two-channel precision mic pre companion product to the 160S Stereo Compressor/Limiter. We refer to this as a "precision mic pre-amp" as it is designed to provide the truest reproduction of the microphone source as is electronically possible, as opposed to "FX" mic pre-amps. The pre-amp features the ubiquitous +48V phantom power, 20 dB pad, and phase invert functions, but also includes a switchable "super low Z" setting which optimizes the pre-amp performance for microphones with very low source impedance. An 11-position coarse gain switch sets the gain between +10 and +60 dB, while the fine gain control varies between -3 and +3 dB. Levels may be monitored on peak-program VU meters with adjustable reference levels.
The signal path consists of a transformer-coupled, discrete-design premium input stage utilizing the proprietary dbx M8' Mic Pre-Amp Module. The minimum signal path design routes the amplified signal directly to a patented high output drive circuit. Each stage throughout the mic pre-amp is small-signal square wave compensated to assure precise phase alignment at all audio frequencies.
Two output options will be available for the mic pre; an analog card that parallels one extra high drive output per channel acting as a premium signal splitter, and a dbx Type IV Conversion System' card that provides proprietary analog-to-digital conversion for both channels with both AES/EBU and S/PDIF outputs.
The dbx Blue Series Solid State Mic Pre has patented high-precision, high-drive, transformer-coupled output stages capable of performing with incredible accuracy and sonic transparency in virtually any audio environment. The custom designed transformer, coupled with a discrete distortion canceling driver circuit, is capable of driving 1000 feet of Belden 8451 cable terminated with a 150 ohm load, while maximum drive levels exceed +30 dBm. Yet this output stage exhibits remarkably low distortion levels, immeasurable using standard audio test equipment.

Features:

  • • 130dB of Dyanmic Range

  • • High-Drive output transformer circuit drives 1000 ft. of Belden® cable at +30dBu with only .007% THD

  • • +48V Phantom Power, Phase Reverse, -20dB Input Pad

  • • Super Low-Z input switch for low impedance mircrophones or altering the microphone's sonic character

  • • Proprietary High Frequency EQ circuit with cut/boost to 40kHz

120A

120A Subharmonic Synthesizer

Why just rock the house when you can rattle the foundation loose. The wildy popular beat of "House Music" is likely to be driven by the throbbing, low-end bass of dbx® Subharmonic Synthesizers in clubs around the world. For decades, the patented dbx Subharmonic Synthesis has been the secret weapon used by mobile DJ's and film and sound professionals to produce an impact unavailable from any other device unique because the dbx process actually produces a new, Waveform Modeled bass note, exactly an octave below the bass in the original audio. The dbx 120A Subharmonic Synthesizer with Modeled Waveform Synthesisô has been specially optimized by dbx engineers for the needs of audio professionals. Its two separate bands of bass synthesis provide the best combination of smoothness and control, and the independent Low Frequency Boost circuit is designed to get the most out of high-performance low frequency speaker systems.

Flexible system interfacing is achieved by providing both 1/4î and RCA input connectors, along with main outputs which can be full range (including synthesis) or high frequency only, along with a separate subwoofer output with its own level control.

The 120A's patented subharmonic synthesis process actually builds the synthesized waveform using the waveshape of the original bass material. Unlike other attempts at bass synthesis, the dbx process produces smooth, musical low frequencies that don't interfere with mid and high-band information, even when maximum synthesis and boost are applied. The result is a low-end punch that people really feel, even at system levels that won't destroy sound equipment or damage hearing.

Features:

  • • Individual control for two ranges of subharmonic frequencies

  • • Separate Low Frequency Boost Circuit

  • • Separate Subwoofer Output

  • • 1/4" Balanced inputs and outputs

  • • RCA Input Connectors

  • • Front panel LEDs that show crossover status and synthesis activity

  • • Patented circuitry ensures that mid and high frequencies are not affected

  • • Built-in crossover with choice of 80Hz or 120Hz crossover point

  • • Enhance bass audio material for use in a veriety of professional applications such as:

  • • Nightclub and dance mixing

  • • DJ Mixing

  • • Theater and Film Sound

  • • Music Recording

  • • Live Music Performance

  • • Broadcasting
